Found a solution!

Problem: Google Drive sync application (version 1.30.2170.0459) quits unexpectedly with an error message on Mac (version 10.11.5) with the error message "Sorry, Google Drive needs to quit. An unknown issue occurred and Google Drive needs to quit. Error: must be encoded string without NULL bytes, not unicode"

1. Backup and then delete ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Drive/user_default/sync_log.log

2. Run Google Drive sync program, wait for it to give an error message, quit program

3. Find the line in sync_log.log that looks like https://docs.google.com/ope...

4. Copy and paste that URL into Google Chrome while logged into the same account as the Google Drive sync program. You should get a message from Drive about trying to view a file and the file not being available for preview

5. Go to https://drive.google.com and search for that file name - mine was in an old folder from 2014, named xxx.docx??

6. Download and then delete that file from Drive via your web browser

7. Go to Trash for Drive, right click on folder, and select "Delete Forever"

8. On your computer, find the same file and move it out of the Google Drive folder

9. Restart the Google Drive sync program. If you have more than one corrupt file name, you may have to repeat it.

Hi Louis, wondered if you can help. Just researching this issues, I'm trying to move my photo storage from dropbox to drive and hit issues with drive repeatedly quitting. Would it be possible to give some more detailed steps on how to download this?

I had the same problem. GDrive stop working in iMac 10.9 & icon greyed out. It says Unable to Connet.

I have tried your solution, its working so far... Fingers crossed... :)

I have the same problem. But mine hangs even when i tried to remove GDrive app into the Trash Bin. And even after I managed to dump the app, it hangs when I tried emptying the bin. Any advice please?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think the reason VLC has to rebuild the cache is because it needs to be able to see which fonts can be used when displaying subtitles.

I would perhaps try completely quitting and maybe re-installing google drive to see if that solves the issue. I haven't experienced this issue recently so maybe Google has issued a fix (though I can't confirm this).

Hi, the terminal command is only suppose to kill appleeventsd, and if it's not running then the terminal command will have no effect.

I'm not sure what the issue may be in that case. I hope it gets fixed.

Also when I checked Activity Monitor before doing the terminal command "appleeventsd" was not listed.

I'm not sure if it's a bug with the Drive app of it's a bug with how OSX Lion handles instances - I know it has been reported to Google and is certainly a discussion topic, so hopefully will get a bug fix in a future update.

Enderta, is this an official S Pen. I know that some non-OEM versions don't have the ability to tweak with the potentiometer. If you can't access it, unfortunately there is no way that I know off to tweak the sensitivity. You may have to replace the pen.

Thanks for the advise but unfortunately my Note II has a different setting (as indicated in the picture attached). I couldn't adjust the potentiometer as there is not one to do so. Can someone help on how I can adjust the sensitivity of my hyper-sensitive S-pen?

Thanks for the post. I recently ran into this issue when trying to sync very large folders (>25GB). Unfortunately, since appleeventsd is automatically restarted (as you noted in the comments), the sync would never finish. I would kill it once, then it would crash an hour or two later after the process restarted.

To remedy this, I wrote a quick shell script that will monitor a process and kill it periodically so my large syncs would finish. If anyone is experiencing the same problem, you can try out my script at https://bitbucket.org/lowtr.... In this case you would download, go to where the script is in Terminal, and run the command like so:

sudo ./killmon.sh appleeventsd 120

That will prompt you for your admin password (required to kill low-level processes), will continue to watch for the appleeventsd process every 120 seconds (default is 60 seconds) and attempt to kill it automatically, allowing your large Google Drive syncs to keep running (like when setting up a new computer).

Also, you probably don't need to have this script running all the time, so after your sync is done, you can hit Control+C to kill the script. Future syncs should only sync the updated files, which are usually much smaller and won't cause issues with appleeventsd.

Hope this helps anyone running into a similar issue.
